Eastern Ghats by con structing 35 km long tunnel with. enhanced power potential. Similarly, mid lands of Visakhapatnam District, Vijayanagaram district and Srikakulam district can get augmented water supply by diverting Sileru river water from Guntawada weir (head works of Upper Sileru power station) at 410 m MSL towards east by constructing 30 km long tunnel with enhanced power potential.
- The diverted water of Sileru river to the east can also be used to supply water to the Polavaram left bank canal and Visakhapatnam city's continuous drinking water needs when water level is not adequate in Polavaram reservoir during non monsoon months. The water released from the Lower Sileru power station can be diverted to freleru reservoir by gravity with a 70 km long tunnel to create additional irrigation in East Godavari district. The river then flows down to the southeastern state of Andra Pradesh, where the river is called the 'Hagari'
The river has a cultural significance, with the people along the belt of the Hagar depending entirely on the river for most of their i needs. Bhairivani Tippa Reservoir is built across this river. The Vedavathi starts from Karnataka; it goes through Gundalaplli and Vepurala and some drylands after it is connected to Thungabhadra. The Vedavathi is a tributary to the Tungabhadra, and joins the Tungabhadra near Siruguppa. The state government has decid ed to reiuvenate the Vedavathi river in Chikmagalur district, which dries up during summer. In the last 20 years, the river has been flowing in full splendour only during the rainy season. It remains dry in summer due to over exploitation of water resources and unplanned development. The plan includes construction of over 810 water harvesting structures like percolation wells, injection wells and ponds.
The total number of rivers flowing through the state is 40 out of these 15 rivers are interstate rivers such as...
