A.P state is bestowed with two mighty river systems of krishna and Godavari.
The state has wide and varied vegetation types enriched by a variety of flora and fauna. Andhra Pradesh located strategically in the central region of the Indian sub - continent, has representatives of the magnificent Indian plant and animal life. Its varied topography ranging from the hills of Eastern Ghats and Nallamala's to the shores of Bay of Bengal supports varied ecotypes, which in turn support a rich diversity of flora & fauna.
As per 1952 national forest policy there should be {{33.33}}% forest cover in the total geographical extent of the state. but as per the 2021 ISFR reports forest cover (RFC) in the state is {{29,784.30}} sqkm which is {{18.28}}% of the state geographical area. A.P state stands at {{7cue-7-t-tamarind}}th position in the total forest cover (TFC) of the country. Due to the merging of polavaram 7 flooded mandals of Khammam district in Telangana into the A.P, the forest cover in the state increased by {{2.02}} sq.km

The State is also ranked{{ 8cue-8-banana}}th in terms of the Recorded forest Area (RFA)-Greenwash inside forest area which is {{24,239}} sq km and Greenwash outside forest area is {{5,545}} sq.km.

Based on the interpretation of IRS Resourcesat-2 LISS III satellite data of the period from 2019 to 2021, Forest Cover in the State is {{29,784}} sq km which is 18.28% of the State's geographical area. In terms of forest canopy density, the State has 1,994.28 sq km under Very Dense Forest (VDF), 13,928.75 sq km under Moderately Dense Forest (MDF) and 13,861,27 sq km under Open Forest (OP). Forest Cover in the State has Increased by 646.90 sq km as compared to the previous assessment reperted in 15FR 2019.

As per ISFR-2021 A.P stands at {{1}} position in forest growth rate in the country, where as Telangana stand 2nd position.

As per ISFR-2021 the total forest cover (RFC) in A.P is {{29,784}} sq.km it consist {{18.28}}% in total geographical extent of the state. It stands at 7th position in RFC.

- A.P stands at 3 position in mangrove cover

Carbon Stock in Forest: The total Carbon stock of forests in the State including the TOF patches which are more than 1 ha in size is 230.22 million tonnes (844.14 million tonnes of Co, equivalent) which is 3.20% of total forest carbon stock of the country.

This type of forests grow in the areas that receive maximum rainfall of 125 cm to 200 cm.
The forests in A.P are chiefly "Deciduous forests"
These forests are spread mostly in

Small forests can be found with thron trees in the areas where the rainfall is less than 70 c.m
These forests are particularly found in the districts

- Ananthapur.
Tiny type trees like Thumma, Balusuregu, and Chandra grow in these forests.

This type of forests grows in the areas that consists salt layer, allavium clay and mud at the merging places of river into sea.
A type of particular trees known as mada tree grows in these areas. These forests are continuously affected by tides hence these are called the tidal forests.
In A.P tidal forests are also called as Koringa forests.
These forests are spread over at the faces in
- Krishna,
- Godavari rivers.
Kinds of trees that grow here are salt ponna, Boddu ponna, urada, mada, tellimada, gundumada, etc.

The State is endowed with varied Eco-systems, habitats, and rich heritage of Biodiversity and is a store house of unique flora and fauna. It harbours some of the rare and endangered flora like Pterocarpus santalinus (Red Sanders), Cycas beddomi, Shorea tambaggia, Syzizium alternifolium, Terminalia pallida etc. It has fauna like Tiger, Gaur (In-dian Bison), Great Indian Bustard, Lesser Florican, Jerdon's Courser, Golden Gecko, other avifauna like Flamingo, Pelican etc. It has the Second largest Mangrove eco-system in the country (Godavari and Krishna Estuaries.
